Newaygo County Poor Farm
Not Available
Located on what is now the grounds of the Newaygo Medical Care Facility just east of Fremont, this was at one time the site of the county operated poor farm and very few people are aware of the cemetery's existence any longer. After the nursing home was built in the mid 1960's, the stones were all laid down and covered with a layer of sod so that they would not be visible from the facility. However, their locations were carefully noted and an accurate census was made beforehand, so all the interments are known. When requested by family members, staff at the facility has been very accommodating to family members and excavated markers for viewing and documentation on request. Although it is unfortunate that there is no outward acknowledgement of these people, their names at least are not lost to us (census). Although everyone has a story, one burial in particular is of interest, that of Harriet Howell who lived during 3 centuries, having been born in 1799 and died in 1903. There are 100 burials at this site.
