Once a logging settlement, the Croton-Hardy area has become a recreational hotspot in Newaygo County since the construction of the hydroelectric dams on the Muskegon River. The Croton Dam was built first, in the early 1900's, followed by Hardy in the 1930's. At one time, Hardy Dam was the largest earthen filled dam in the country.
